The Blepharoplasty Procedure

Upper Blepharoplasty: Upper eyelid surgery employs an incision discreetly concealed within the natural crease of the eyelid, often referred to as the natural folds. During this procedure, the skin, muscle, and fat layers undergo alterations to craft the desired eyelid contour. Double eyelid surgery can also be integrated if needed to create a double vision effect. At times, Dr. Frankel might also adjust the fold’s position if he deems it beneficial for the patient’s appearance. It’s important during the initial consultation to set realistic expectations.

Lower Blepharoplasty: Dr. Frankel typically addresses the lower eyelids by repositioning the orbital fat, eliminating the need for a skin incision. However, in instances where there’s a need to smooth out a superficial bulge or to remove redundant skin, an incision right below the lashes becomes essential. Such an incision is only opted for when the lower lid shows solid support or when additional measures are in place to bolster it.

Alternative to Blepharoplasty Surgery

As an alternative to lower or upper eyelid surgery, a hyaluronic acid gel filler can be injected to fill in areas where volume loss is contributing to the problem. With these cosmetic procedures, there is no cutting of excess eyelid skin involved, and the outcome can be quite remarkable if the patient does not have a lot of loose skin. The upper lids can benefit from filler as well as hollows that exist under the eyes. Dr. Frankel began doing these surgical procedures in 1997 and, over the years, has become a leading expert at it. While there is always a chance for bruising and swelling, this will fade over time, with the results being extremely rejuvenating and natural looking. So, if you are not an ideal candidate for plastic surgery, consider fillers as a treatment option.

DR. FRANKEL’S BLEPHAROPLASTY NOTES

“My approach to the upper and lower eyelids has changed dramatically from when I first began performing this surgery 22 years ago in Beverly Hills. At that time, I was taught to remove as much excess skin, fat, and muscle as possible in order to get rid of all the problematic ‘extra’ tissue.

Over the years, it became clear that removing all the tissue surrounding the eye did not make things look younger or better: It made the eyes look older. Eyes with a youthful appearance aren’t prominent and round and don’t have many visible lids or hollow sockets or the whites of the eyes showing on the lower lids. Youthful eyes have eyelid skin that is taut and plump with fat surrounding them.

Cosmetic eyelid surgery, more than any other facial procedure, has the potential to alter the essence of someone’s entire facial appearance. Because of this, I strive to be conservative with the eyes and to ‘restructure’ rather than to remove the tissues.”

Are there any risks associated with blepharoplasty?

As with any surgery, there are potential risks. For blepharoplasty, these can include infection, bleeding, scarring, difficulty closing the eyes, dry eyes, and potential vision problems. However, when performed by an experienced and qualified plastic or ophthalmic surgeon, the risks are minimized. It’s essential for patients to discuss potential risks and benefits with their surgeon before undergoing the procedure.

Does blepharoplasty leave scars?

Blepharoplasty is designed to leave minimal and discreet scarring. In upper eyelid surgery, the incision is typically hidden within the natural eyelid fold, making it barely noticeable once healed. In the case of lower eyelid surgery, if an incision is required, it is made just below the eyelashes and is also inconspicuous over time. Proper aftercare and following post-operative instructions can further enhance scar healing and minimization.

How much does blepharoplasty typically cost?

The cost of blepharoplasty can vary significantly based on the surgeon’s experience, the region where the surgery is performed, the complexity of the procedure, and other associated costs like anesthesia and facility fees. It’s important to get a detailed estimate from your surgeon and understand what’s included in the total price.

Will I feel pain during the blepharoplasty procedure?

Blepharoplasty is usually performed under local anesthesia, sometimes combined with sedation. This means that the area will be numbed, and you shouldn’t feel pain. If you’re sedated, you may feel drowsy and relaxed, but again, pain should be minimal to non-existent. Always discuss any concerns about pain or sensation with your surgeon prior to the procedure.

Can blepharoplasty be combined with other facial cosmetic procedures?

Yes, blepharoplasty can often be combined with other facial surgeries or treatments for a more comprehensive facial rejuvenation. Common combinations include facelift, brow lift, or rhinoplasty. Additionally, non-surgical treatments like Botox or fillers can be done in conjunction with blepharoplasty to address other facial concerns. Combining procedures can be advantageous in terms of recovery time and achieving harmonious results. However, it’s crucial to discuss your aesthetic goals with your surgeon to determine the best combination of procedures for your individual needs.
